D. R. Congo (Formerly Zaire and before that the Belgian Congo)

Blood River A book by Telegraph journalist Tim Butcher which describes a journey he took in the DR Congo in 2004 following the route of the Victorian explorer Stanley along the river Congo. However, this book serves to underline how economic development does not always progress and can move in a backwards direction. Tim describes the DR Congo as 'an undeveloping country'. It also demonstrates the limited way in which the UN and aid agencies can operate in an environment where there is no real law and order and a corrupt few need paid off at every turn. http://www.bloodriver.co.uk/ Telegraph magazine article features an extract from the book http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2007/05/26/smcongo26.xml Also see http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/05/28/wblood28.xml (Do a search from the Telegraph's home page for 'Congo Butcher' if you find these links don't work.)
