Sustainability

A2

Sustainable development: 'meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs' (Bruntland 1987)

Exercises

GG5 requires candidates to draw on connections between different aspects of geography represented in the WJEC specification.
  • Sustainable development is studied through four aspects, each developing from different parts of the specification.

A. Food supply

  • The balance between population and food supply at a global scale.

B. Water supply

  • The physical supply of water needs to be linked to human demand.

C. The natural environment

  • Human demands can affect a biome which requires sensitive management if irreversable damage is to be avoided.

D. The urban environment

  • The dynamic nature of urban populations leads to stresses on housing, transport and waste disposal within the urban environment and its periphery.

Millennium ecosystem assessment reports

March 30, 2005 London. "A landmark study released today reveals that approximately 60 percent of the ecosystem services that support life on Earth - such as fresh water, capture fisheries, air and water regulation, and the regulation of regional climate, natural hazards and pests - are being degraded or used unsustainably. Scientists warn that the harmful consequences of this degradation could grow significantly worse in the next 50 years."
