Tsunami! Site developed to provide general information about tsunamis - large waves generated by seismic activity which can cause significant damage to coastal communities. Includes information about the mechanisms of tsunami generation and propagation, the impact of tsunamis on humankind, and the Tsunami Warning System. Indian ocean tsunami, Dec 26 2004

Map Where the quake happened http://www.guardian.co.uk/graphic/0,5812,1380083,00.html Detailed maps of the destruction from the BBC http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/world/04/asia_quake/quake_maps/html/1.stm

"A great earthquake occurred at 00:58:53 (UTC) on Sunday, December 26, 2004. The magnitude 9.0 event has been located OFF THE WEST COAST OF NORTHERN SUMATRA." USGS

"According to the Guinness Book of Records, the highest death toll from a tsunami until now happened in 1896, when 27,000 people were drowned following an earthquake off the coast of Japan." BBC News 27 Dec 2004

The impact of the tsunami was felt as far away as Somalia and Kenya in E Africa, although the impact was greatest on Sumatra (Indonesia), which was closest to the epicentre. The coasts of Thailand, India and groups of islands such as the Maldives, Andaman and Nicobar were all badly affected.

USGS report from the US National Earthquake Information Center. High resolution 'jpeg' maps available. "The devastating megathrust earthquake of December 26th, 2004 occurred on the interface of the India and Burma plates and was caused by the release of stresses that develop as the India plate subducts beneath the overriding Burma plate." http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqinthenews/2004/usslav/

lostboy

Do you know this boy?

"The boy about 2 years, from Khoa  Lak is missing his parents. Nobody knows what country he comes from. If anyboy  known him please contact us... "

The above message was sent to me by a friend in an e-mail on January 7th 2005. This boy has been claimed by relatives. Many families who survived the tsunami have simply no idea whether their relatives are alive or dead. The problem is made worse when survivors are children or cannot tell you who they are (and don't have the resources available to wealthy tourists). Some apparent orphans have been 'claimed' by more than one couple and there are fears of child trafficking.

Natural hazards and disaster relief

"Earthquakes themeslves rarely kill; they do their worst by causing buildings to collapse on people, by creating deadly tsunamis or by setting off landslides.  Distruption to infrastructure prevents rescue services from reaching areas in time, and of course clears the way for those other horsemen of the apocalypse, famine and pestilence."
